Why Did Dictators Fear KT?

On August 8, 1973, former South Korean presidential candidate Kim Dae-jung suddenly disappeared from the Grand Palace Hotel in Kudan. Five days later, he was found blindfolded and covered in wounds in front of his Seoul home. At the time, tensions between Japan, South Korea, and even the United States reached a fever pitch over his whereabouts. Why didn't the intelligence agents who received orders to kidnap and assassinate him kill him? What actions did the Japanese allegedly involved in the plot take during those "five blank days"? What "truth" was hidden behind an incident whose path to discovery was blocked by "political compromise"?
